INSTRUCTORS

All of our instructors are noted for top-notch material and a friendly approach that is remarkably accessible and effective for dancers and singers at all levels. With these respected experts on board, we can look forward to hours of solid learning and sparkling fun.

John Morovich
Croatian

John grew up in and remains an active member of Seattle's sizable Croatian community. In addition to extensive study and performance of Croatian folkore, he has taught traditional music and dance from all regions of Croatia to rave reviews at seminars and dance camps across the USA and Canada. John is also a wonderful singer and musician, and will be directing Croatian singing classes at camp. He currently serves as the artistic director of the Seattle Junior Tamburitzans and regularly performs with a number of Croatian and Balkan musical ensembles and with vocalist Mary Sherhart.

Monica Caivano
Argentinian Tango

An Argentinean treasure from Buenos Aires, Monica Caivano has incorporated her expertise and unique talents by developing Milongas and Tango classes in the Austin community since 1998. Ms. Caivano has produced two tango productions with the Aztlan Dance Company among other performances, demonstrations and workshops she has taught throughout the state. Monica graduated from St. Edward's University with a degree in theater/dramatic arts and has been dancing tango for over 10 years.

MUSIC

2001 Texas Camp band

Newcomers are enthusiastically welcomed! This year, we invite Singers to join the Camp Band! If you plan to play and sing in the Camp Band, please mark your registration form accordingly, and we will send you this year's new tunes and pre-camp reheasal dates by email. There will also be practice tapes made available on request to aid in learning tunes. Plan to attend pre-camp rehearsals in Austin, if possible, as rehearsals at Camp will be for review. Rehearsals are currently scheduled for September 13, October 11, and November 8. Contact Shirley Johnson for details on time and place. Please remember to bring your instruments, voices, sheet music, stands, and smiles!

Thomas Yeseta, Greg Yeseta, Steve Ovanin
(Tamburitza)

Thomas Yeseta began playing the accordion at age 6, eventually adding bass and organ to his repertoire. In 1964 he joined the St. Anthony's Tamburica Orchestra "Croatia" in Los Angeles, California, and eventually became Director. In 1977 Tom and his brother Greg formed the Yeseta Brothers Tamburica Orchestra, a group highly regarded for its European sound and depth of repertoire. Along with Steve Ovanin, they will be providing Croatian music at camp, and leading a special Camp Band Croatian set!

Glover Gil and Leigh Mahoney
(Argentinian Tango)

Pianist Glover Gill has accompanied Luciano Pavarotti with the Austin Lyric Opera as well as provided arrangements for Double Trouble, The Geezinslaw Brothers, Alejandro Escovedo, and others. He also formed the Austin-based Tosca Tango Orchestra. In addition to performing in Buenos Aires at the 5th annual International Tango Festival, the Orchestra has released four recordings of original modern tango music. Leigh Mahoney is first violinist with the Tosca String Quartet, formed in 1997 as part of the Tosca Tango Orchestra. This popular group performs original compositions in the nuevo tango style.

Mockingbird
(Contra)

Austin-based Mockingbird (Max Cappleman, Rich Goss, and Rick Piel) is a high-energy contra dance band in demand all over Texas and soon, Oklahoma. Their music is closer to the jigs and reels commonly played in the northeast US—a rare opportunity for Texas dancers to have a “New England” dance experience!

ADDED ATTRACTIONS

From specialty dance hours to an extensive bazaar featuring music, costumes, jewelry and folkcrafts, Texas Camp provides a host of extras catering to a range of tastes and interests.
